Under the auspices of the Office of International Programs, these UTPA students studied “Social Issues in Contemporary Mexico” and “Child and Family Services in Mexico” during the months of July and August.

“The purpose of this study abroad program was to learn about the social services and resources available in Mexico and to experience the culture,” Penzerro said.
Penzerro said during the visit, the students toured several social services/ agencies (governmental and non-governmental organizations) and visited indigenous villages.
They also volunteered their services to community agencies, including CERESO, women’s prison; La Granja, juvenile delinquency facility; Juconi, a program for underprivileged children; Casa de Angles, a facility for handicapped children; Casa de Sal, an AIDS clinic; Desarollo Integral de la Familia (DIF); and they also interchanged with students in the Puebla social work school.
UTPA students who studied abroad this summer were Adrianna Alaniz, Alicia Collins, Ashley Diamond, Marina Rodriguez, Marta Garza, Mary Guajardo, Carol Saldaña, Mary Hinojosa, Christine Salinas, Patsy Hernandez, Claudia Peña, Rick Esquivel, Cynthia Zamora, Sandra Orta, Diana Garza, Silvia Silva, Eduardo Gamboa, Yolanda Garza, Eliza De Leon, Yvonne Muñoz, Estela Gorena, Gina Saenz, Hector Garza, Jessica Macedo, Jessica Zuniga, Liz Martinez and Lucinda Cano.
