UTPA President Dr. Miguel A. Nevárez greeted new members thanking them for their efforts in participating on one of the most influential University organizations.

“I am very proud of the UTPA Alumni Association because I have seen it develop over the years since its inception in the early 1970s,” Nevárez said.

“I remember approaching then President Dr. Ralph Schilling and telling him why I thought it was so important for our University to maintain a close relationship with its former students. As a result of our discussion and with the help from many others, we were able to convince Dr. Schilling to give us permission to organize the Pan American University Alumni Association.”

Today, the association continues seeking alumni support by creating the Lifetime Membership Program and by setting up UTPA Alumni chapters outside of the Rio Grande Valley.

This year’s new board members include Frances Trevino, Wendy Smith Sturgis, Dr. Jon P. Patterson, Ofelia Peña, Robert C. Norman and Jose “Joey” Gonzalez.
