Dr. Frederick (Ted) von Ende will return to teaching after 12 years as director for the Office of Institutional Effectiveness at The University of Texas-Pan American.

Von Ende – who joined UTPA over 35 years ago as a professor with the English department – became director of OIE in 1989 to help develop appropriate planning strategies that would meet the needs of a growing institution.
“The office was created after we did an self-assessment study for re-accreditation,” said von Ende, who helped write the study. “In order to be reaccredited we had to demonstrate that we had a clear vision of what the University was supposed to be doing, that we knew what our mission was and that we were assessing the effectiveness by which we were doing that.”
With help from von Ende and the OIE office, the University has been able to grow as an institution and now focus on becoming a regional research institution.
"Our institution has been able to meet the needs of our students because of the knowledge and hard work of talented people like Ted," said UTPA President Dr. Miguel A. Nevárez. "His expertise in the field of strategic planning, and his intuitive and invaluable collaboration has helped the University outline its role as the educational leader in South Texas. Although he will be greatly missed as part of our administrative team, I know he will continue to influence the lives of students through his teachings and writings."
During his 35 years as a faculty member and administrator, von Ende has seen many of the University’s transformations including the hiring of Nevárez, the merger with the University of Texas System and the extensive growth through increased enrollment and the construction of new state-of-the-art facilities such as the Engineering Building, Science Building and most recently the Visitors Center.
Von Ende will leave the OIE office August 31 and return to the English department. He will spend the fall semester doing research and getting up to speed with new instructional techniques and then begin teaching in the spring 2004.
Although he will dedicate his time to helping students through teaching, von Ende said he will always be available to contribute his knowledge and experience to others.
“Early in my career at Pan American, I became involved in the service side of University life, serving on a multitude of committees and councils,” he said. “I expect that I will continue to participate in that.”
Effective September 1, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness will be renamed the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness with Dr. Susan Griffith as interim executive director.
