The University of Texas-Pan American Veteran’s Business Outreach Center (VBOC) is helping area veterans succeed in business.

Ruby Berman, a World War II veteran who served his country with pride as a radio crewmember, opened his own merchant services company, and is enjoying the successes of his business thanks to efforts from the center.

“The Veteran’s center was extremely helpful in getting me the Small Business Administration loan,” Berman said. “They helped me organize my paper work for my business plan.”

R.G.V. Merchant Services, Inc. specializes in check guarantees, credit/debit card processing, gift and loyalty cards, and fleet cards.

With the assistance from the VBOC, Berman learned important skills needed to manage a business, and was able to create a financial plan.

"VBOC helped Berman by providing him with free technical assistance in the development of his small business,” said Jessica Idy Salinas, director of the center. “A business plan with Small Business Administration loan guarantee documents was developed in order for him to get a small business loan.”

However, Berman’s career in sales did not begin in the Rio Grande Valley. Shortly after returning from service, Berman began his career as a salesman in the Bronx, N. Y.

That career would eventually lead him to his first entrepreneurship in 1963, and finally to South Texas where he and his wife, Helen, have made the Valley their home.

Berman is now a business owner thanks to help from UTPA.

It is here where Berman hopes to continue succeeding in his business and hopefully in the future teach others about one of his greatest pastimes – stained glass art.

The UTPA Veteran Business Outreach Center provides free one-to-one business counseling to new and existing businesses. VBOC also provides on-line training introducing Veteran clients to small business concepts.
