“Our goal is to have open communication,” said James Langabeer, vice president for the division. “Our division is the largest at the University in terms of the number of staff. We ought to be making a big impact in Edinburg, South Texas and the entire state.”
Langabeer informed employees on the issues of academic advancements, construction plans, health insurance benefits and the latest budget updates.
The University’s goal in the academic agenda includes a presence in Starr County. The expansion to the area will provide the opportunity for people from the Upper Valley to pursue a college degree.
“They are an academically starved group. When we start offering classes in our own free-standing facility, it will be the first glimmer of light for the people out there,” Langabeer said.
Another accomplishment for the University was the recent accreditation for the doctoral program in the College of Business Administration. The International Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business accredited the University’s business program making it the third Hispanic Serving Institution in the nation to receive this prestigious recognition for all business degree levels, from bachelors to doctorate.
Langabeer also spoke of expansions on or near campus including the new education building, the Regional Academic Health Center (RAHC) and the remodeling of University Drive – all of which may cause some disruption for students, faculty and staff

Finally, Langabeer gave an update of budget changes for the 2004 fiscal year. He spoke of some budget cuts for departments, but reaffirmed that there would be no job layoffs.
Also speaking at the presentation about health and safety issues was Richard Costello, director of the Environmental Health and Safety Department.
