| Discussing plans at a June 17 meeting for El Río, a major Smithsonian Institution exhibition that will be held at The University of Texas-Pan American, were from left to right Cynthia L. Vidaurri, co-curator of El Río and a full time curator at the Smithsonian Institution Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage; Nilda Villalta, Smithsonian exhibit coordinator; George Gause, UTPA librarian; and Oscar Villarreal, assistant director of the UTPA physical plant. In its first viewing outside Washington D.C., El Río focuses on the people and the environment along the Río Grande/río Bravo basin from Colorado to Northern Mexico. Opening in August, the exhibit will be free and open to the public. After a six-month stay at UTPA, the El Río will begin a five-year touring schedule to other cities in the U.S. and Mexico.
