Price, who will begin his duties June 16, is a native Texan, born and raised in Forth Worth.

Price said he looks forward to learning more about the culture of UTPA and its students to help him accomplish his goal.
Price obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Carthage College in Wisconsin in 1982. In 1988, he obtained his master’s in English from Drake University and went to Iowa State University, where he received his doctorate in Higher Education in 1992.
Previous work experiences, all at Drake University, also include director of Residence Life; assistant to the Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Life; and coordinator of International Programs Abroad. Price also has published several articles concerning student affairs and has teaching experience as a visiting assistant professor of education at Iowa State University and instructed master’s program classes in student personnel services and residence life at Drake.
Price has been an active participant in the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators as a conference chair, presenter and board member since 1986 and was also an active member and former officer in the Iowa Student Personnel Association.
Price says that most of his job responsibilities at UTPA will be consistent with those he had at Drake.
“Having served as a dean of students for the past nine years, I feel very comfortable with both the formal and informal roles that come with the position and believe I have learned how to work effectively with staff, faculty and, most importantly, students,” Price said.
However, he said that UTPA is a completely different type of institution serving a completely different type of student body, so there will be many new challenges to face with this new environment.
Dennis McMillan, associate vice president for Enrollment and Student Services, and Susan Miller, director of the High School to University Services program, co–chaired the search committee. McMillan said Price’s extensive experience will help him meet the challenges presented by the rapidly growing student population with varying needs found at UTPA.
“We are very excited to get an individual here that has the credentials and experience of Dr. Price. He not only has a lot of experience but he also started out in the dean of students business being mentored by, what we have been told, a great dean of students at Drake University,” said McMillan.
John A. Edwards, vice president for Enrollment and Student Services, said he was most impressed with Price’s areas of work experience and his leadership positions in state and national student personnel associations.
“He has been a community leader in Des Moines and we are sure he is going to be one here,” Edwards said. “We are very fortunate in having him at our University.”
Price replaces Elvira Davis, former UTPA Dean of Students, who retired this year. The Office of the Dean of Students, a component of the Division of Enrollment & Student Services at UT Pan American, is responsible for promoting student development and expanding students' education to include learning experiences outside the traditional classroom.
