Students, faculty and staff browsed tables featuring environmental friendly products, such as low-flow showerheads, compact fluorescent light bulbs and pencils and rulers made from recycled materials. The Pre-dental Society handed out composting buckets and sold fruit cups as a fund raiser.

Jessica Rodriguez, a senior biology major and secretary of the Environmental Awareness Club, one of the event’s sponsors, handed out native plants in exchange for environmental pledges by participants.
“The most common pledge is to recycle but we also got ones pledging to save energy, to save water and to walk instead of driving to places,” Rodriguez said.
Activities during the event included a performance by the South Texas Indian Dancers and a Bob Davis karate show.

Kathryn Dodd, a UTPA lecturer in biology, is faculty advisor for the group.
“The goal of the club is to create awareness about environmental issues and provide a means for students to find out what they are interested in be it locally or nationally in regard to the environment,” said Hobbs.
Other sponsors of the event included the Pre-medical Society; Pre-dental Society; Bacchus and Gamma; Sigma Lambda Gamma; and Silver Tongue Orators Society.
