UTPA Choir members bring home awards from Texas competitions

Members of the University of Texas-Pan American Choir brought home several awards after competing in El Paso and San Antonio contests April 5.

Esperanza Medina, a senior and mezzo-soprano, was named a semi-finalist and competed in the finals of the Laureen Butler Vocal Competition of the El Paso Opera.

Five other UTPA choir members, all sopranos, received honors at the Student Auditions of the South Texas Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing at Trinity University in San Antonio.

Rebecca Gutierrez, a UTPA junior, was named a semi-finalist in the competition. Lenette Hernandez, senior, took first while Celinda Herevia, junior, placed second. Taking third was Denisse Martinez, senior and in fourth was Julissa Herrera, sophomore.

Medina, Herevia and Herrera are under the direction of Ruth Crews – a UTPA assistant professor of music – while Gutierrez, Hernandez and Martinez are under the direction of Dr. Vivian Munn, a UTPA associate professor.
