Miguel Martinez, Physical Plant welder I at The University of Texas-Pan American, received the “Safety Employee of the Month” award for March.
Martinez has been especially cognizant in obtaining a “hot works permit,” which is mandated whenever a welding or cutting operation occurs on University property. There are 1,800 fires annually at universities, and a number are caused by these types of operations, said Richard Costello, director of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (DEHS).
“It would be easy for Miguel to bypass the safety process since we cannot be there all the time,” Costello said. “However, he has been diligent in his efforts to ensure he is compliant, and for this, we are honoring him.”
The “Safety Employee of the Month” award is given to employees who take the extra effort to comply with UTPA rules, regulations and best practices enforced by the DEHS.
As part of his award, Martinez received a $20 Wal-Mart gift certificate.
