The University of Texas-Pan American College of Science and Engineering recently received international endorsement for its bachelor of science degrees.

Approved by the UTPA Curriculum Committee at its December meeting, the international endorsement will provide certification to potential employers that the individual has experience and expertise in working in a bilingual and bicultural environment. The endorsement, effective fall 2002, will be noted as a comment line on final transcripts, with other recognition possible at graduation.

To qualify, students must take a year of a modern language and work for six months in a country using that language. The UTPA Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers two semesters of technical Spanish for students interested in this endorsement, and other languages may be added in the future.

Students who complete both technical Spanish courses, SPAN 2301 and SPAN 2302, must work two summers or a continuous six-month period in Mexico or other Spanish-speaking country.

Engineering Advisory Council members strongly supported the addition of the international endorsement and encourage the University to promote the program as a way to attract more global industries to career fairs and increase the value of graduates.
