The University of Texas-Pan American Art Gallery will host a fine arts exhibit, “Departures,” Jan. 2 to Feb. 3 in the Communication Arts and Sciences Building. The exhibit features new drawings by artist Jeffrey Whittle.

Whittle – who studied art at the University of Georgia in Athens and received his bachelor of fine arts in drawing and painting in 1992 – will give a slide talk Thursday, Jan. 17 at noon in Room 228 of the Fine Arts Building. A reception will follow that evening at 7 in the University Gallery.

“I am very excited about this group of drawings and the opportunity to exhibit them at The University of Texas-Pan American,” Whittle said. “Only one of the drawings in this exhibition, titled 'Departures,' is a direct response to the tragic events of September 11. That drawing was difficult to make, yet even more difficult not to make. Art can hopefully be therapeutic. "

In 1997, Whittle received a master of fine arts from Cornell University. Additional studies include a semester abroad at the Lorenzo di Medici Art Institute, Florence, Italy and a semester at The Cooper Union in New York City.

Whittle has exhibited his work individually and in shows throughout the United States. He is a recipient of individual artist's grants from the Iowa Arts Council (2000) and the Georgia Council for the Arts (1994).”

Last summer, he was invited to be an artist-in-residence at Crater Lake National Park by the Eastern Frontier Society in Maine.">

In addition to creating and exhibiting his work, Whittle has taught drawing, painting and art appreciation at Hobart/William Smith Colleges and at the University of Northern Iowa. During the spring of 2000, he was a visiting lecturer at The University of Texas-Pan American.

Admission to all exhibitions is free. The galleries are open Monday through Friday except University holidays.
