A reception with the artist is scheduled for Thursday, January 17th from 7-9 p.m. in the University Gallery. Whittle will also be giving a slide-talk on Thursday, January 17th at Noon in Room 228 of the Fine Arts Building on the UTPA campus.
Whittle states, “In a broad sense, these are about memory and transformation. They are about travel, loss and gain and the things that you leave behind. I nearly called the show Rear View Mirror.” He says, “Only one of the drawings in this exhibition, titled Departures, is a direct response to the tragic events of September 11th. That drawing was difficult to make, yet even more difficult not to make. Art can hopefully be therapeutic.”
