"The purpose of the TA component of our grant is to provide professional development for teachers so that our GEAR UP students can get a better quality teacher," said Jorge L. Requirements for the TA component include: being a teacher who holds a bachelor’s degree; employed at a GEAR UP project school and serving a GEAR UP cohort of students; and having a combined grade point average of at least 2.5.
Applicants also must follow a course of study by priority area, which includes a teacher certification in the current teaching area, master’s degree in current content area and a middle school certification.
Areas of study tuition assistance will be provided for include teacher certification in English, math, science, secondary, social studies, as well as master’s degrees in counseling, reading, math, science, English, history, Spanish and special education.
For the summer and fall 2001 semesters, 30 teachers from participating GEAR UP schools were awarded more than $21,000 in tuition assistance money.
"The amount of money awarded to each recipient varies depending on how many classes they register for and/or how much they are requesting," Teniente said. "This will be a yearly component so long as we have funding and applicants meet the criteria."
