More than 60 students, faculty and community members gathered to walk for a good cause Saturday, May 5 for first The University of Texas-Pan American "Walk of Excellence."
Sponsored by the Development Office, the event at the new UTPA-Edinburg baseball stadium raised money for the Greater University Fund and promoted the involvement of student organizations and the community.
“We had a lot of pledge sheets turned in from student organizations and the staff, ” said Alice McMurry, event coordinator. “We were able to raise a couple thousand dollars, and that is really wonderful.”
Walk-a-thon participants included members of University student organizations who obtained individual pledges and corporate sponsorships from students, faculty/staff, the public and local business.

UTPA President Dr. Miguel A. Nevarez was among those walking for a good cause. He said events like this have many benefits.
“Just having so many students and faculty unified to raise money is very gratifying,” Nevarez said. “And at the same time, we’re doing our bodies some good by walking."
Several sponsorship opportunities were available - 5k Ggand sponsor ($3,000), 1,000-meter sponsor ($1,000) and the 500-meter sponsor ($500).
