In an effort to promote children's theatre in the area, Alpha Psi Omega – the national honorary dramatic fraternity – will present a production of Brian Warren's "Enough of the Huff and Puff" on Dec. 1-3 at The University of Texas-Pan American studio theatre.
Suitable for children of all ages, the interactive play dramatizes the story of the "Three Little Pigs." Showtimes are 7 p.m. Dec. 1 and 2, with a 2 p.m. matinee Dec. 3. Tickets are 50 cents each and available at the door.
Director Carlos Garza will stage the play himself after serving as technical director on production of an earlier draft of the script last year at South Texas Community College. Warren has revised the play somewhat as a result of the previous presentation.
"There is a decided dearth of quality entertainment for children,” Warren said. “This statement is based in part on frequent conversations with parents such as me, and in part on personal observation. Out of this need arose the concept for 'Enough of the Huff and Puff.'"
Warren researched a number of versions of the story and found the basic tale has developed into many variations. He added a few touches for his version, such as Little Red Riding Hood wandering in and out occasionally, only to be told by one character or another or even the audience, that she is in the wrong story.
The play is geared to introduce children to the theatre in an open and interactive environment, and they are asked to help the plot along at several key points
"Children under third grade are the audience this play is aimed at, but it appeals to the child in all of us,” said Holly Retherford of Alpha Psi Omega, who plays the smart pig in the play.
