The University of Texas-Pan American Folkloric Dance Company will begin its Alegria 2000-2001 concert series in December.

The series opens with 7 p.m. performances Dec. 1 and 2 and a 2 p.m. matinee Dec. 3. Scheduled dates for February are Feb. 9 and 16 at 7 p.m., and Feb. 10-11 and 17-18 at 2 p.m.

All concerts are at the UTPA Fine Arts Auditorium. Tickets, which go on sale approximately two weeks before the event, are $5 in advance, $7 at the door.

Tickets are available at the Edinburg, Pharr, Weslaco and Harlingen chambers of commerce, the Rio Grande Valley Partnership in Weslaco, Hermes Music in McAllen and the UTPA Payments and Collections office.

The program includes authentic dances and songs from different regions and states of Mexico and Spain. The 36 dancers and musicians will bring to life the color, drama and excitement of Mexico’s La Revolucion de 1910, Fiesta de Michoacan, a Tarascan wedding celebration and Corridos Mexicanos, a ballet based on a love triangle.

Additional dance suites feature Puebla, Veracruz and Violin Huapango, a combination of dance representing the Huasteca Region of Tamaulipas and the traditional Jaliscience dances of Jalisco.

Meanwhile, the dance company also will present a series of student concerts for public and private school children. Concert dates are Nov. 30, Dec. 1, Feb. 8 and Feb. 9 at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Prior reservations must be made through the Folkloric Dance Company office.
