Bud Frankenberger, special assistant to the president, will act as interim vice president for the new division.
"The university’s initiative to improve student access and success has focused greater institutional attention on how we can best increase participation rates and help our students to progress toward achievement of their educational goals in timely fashion," said Dr. Miguel A. Nevárez, president of UTPA.
"The creation of the Division of Enrollment and Student Services is intended to pull together some of the non-faculty components that contribute the most to student recruitment and retention in order to enhance effectiveness and efficiency through coordination, collaboration and synergy," he said.
The new division will absorb components of the former Division of Student Affairs and add the offices of Outreach and Recruitment, Financial Aid, Admissions and Records, and the Learning Assistance Center to create a comprehensive enrollment management unit.
Frankenberger will serve as interim vice president while the university conducts a national search for a permanent vice president.
"Bud has been directly involved with the outreach and recruitment effort this past year and was instrumental in initiating the Texas Scholars and University Scholars programs that encourage Valley students to aim high in their educational aspirations," Nevárez said. "He was the architect of our movement to more selective admissions, and he has served as the liaison to South Texas Community College."
Directors in the new division are Arnold Trejo, director of Student Outreach and Financial Services, which will include recruitment, financial aid and orientation functions; David Zuniga, director of the Office of Admissions and Records; Dr. Santiago Silva, director of Student Support Services, formerly the Learning Assistance Center; Elvie Davis, dean of students, Student Development Services; Richard Treviño, director of Special Programs; Susan Miller, director of High School to University Services; and Olga Salinas, interim director, Student Health Services.
