At $104 million, UTPA’s fiscal year 1999-2000 budget, approved by The University of Texas System Board of Regents Aug. 12, is a seven percent increase over the 1998-99 operating budget.
The budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins Sept. 1, includes a $100 per month salary increase for staff employees mandated by the State Legislature and a 12 percent increase in funding for faculty salaries for merit raises, promotions, new positions and increased resources for faculty to teach summer classes.
"We are very pleased that the Legislature passed a non-faculty $100 per month raise — and funded it," said James Langabeer, vice president for business affairs at UTPA.
Other increases in UTPA’s budget include $120,000 in additional funds to academic departments for operating, travel and wage expenses, and a $167,000 boost in research initiative funds.
The overall operating budget for the 15-campus UT System for 1999-2000 totals $5.42 billion. The new budgets for the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio and UT Health Science Center at Houston include $2.5 million in appropriations for operation of the Regional Academic Health Center in the Rio Grande Valley.
