"All of the courses are online; the entire program is online," said Dr. Jane LeMaster, director of UTPA’s Office of Graduate Studies for the College of Business Administration. "It lends another element of flexibility to achieving the MBA.
"What I think makes the program especially nice for the students here is that it will allow them to not disrupt their MBA program. If they’re down to their last three classes and get transferred by their company, they can complete their degree with the online MBA. That’s a really nice feature.
"The other thing it does is it gives people who are unable to come to campus — those who travel a lot or get transferred out for six months at a time — an avenue to get their MBA without interruption," she said.
Prospective MBA Online students apply for admission to one of the eight participating universities — UTPA, UT Arlington, UT Brownsville, UT Dallas, UT El Paso, UT Permian Basin, UT San Antonio or UT Tyler. The degree can be completed in as few as two years or as many as six, with the degree conferred by the campus at which the student is admitted. LeMaster said the application deadline for fall is Aug. 5.
Course delivery will be handled by the UT System’s virtual campus, the UT TeleCampus. A central service and support unit for distance education initiatives, the TeleCampus features a website similar in design to a traditional campus with admissions links, digital libraries and student support services.
"We’re not the first to offer an online MBA," said Dr. Darcy Hardy, TeleCampus director. "But we do have some marked advantages over other universities that do.
"With our reputation for excellence and more than 100-year history of conferring reputable higher education degrees, we give the students what they need — recognition, reliability and flexibility," he said.
Students in the program will be faced with the same highly selective process that onsite students face. Admissions criteria vary slightly from school to school, but the same requirements for GMAT scores, GPAs and essays exist for the online program as for traditional programs at each of the universities. Tuition will be comparable to on-campus offerings, with a marginally different fee structure.
