Both concerts are free and open to the public.
In its first year of existence, the South Texas Youth Symphony is composed of 86 gifted student musicians from throughout the Rio Grande Valley and from the Mexican cities of Reynosa and Matamoros.
"Youth and Fantasy" are the themes of the two concerts. The group will perform the Overture to Humperdinck’s "Hansel and Gretel," selections from Stravinsky’s fairy tale ballet "The Firebird" and the suite from Maurice Ravel’s "Mother Goose." Richard Strauss’ Horn Concerto in E flat and Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 will complete the program.
The South Texas Youth Symphony is cosponsored by the UTPA Department of Music.
