The University Galleries at The University of Texas-Pan American will host a grand opening and reception for its newest facility, the Lamar Gallery, from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 1, in room seven of the Lamar School Building, located on Schunior Road in Edinburg.

"The galleries here (on the main campus) are for temporary exhibits that change about once a month. The Lamar Gallery will hold large collections of art that will be up for about six months before changing," said Valerie Innella, gallery director. She said the addition of the Lamar Gallery will "free up space" for the Master of Fine Arts student exhibits and for the University Permanent Collection, allowing students to view works by master artists including Salvador Dali, Eduardo Garcia, Man Ray, Francis Picabia and Francisco Goya year-round.

The grand opening will showcase new additions to the Permanent Collection, sculpture and oil paintings from the Shary-Shivers Estate in Sharyland.

UTPA has two other galleries on its main campus — the Charles and Dorothy Clark Gallery in the Fine Arts Complex and the University Gallery inside the Communication Arts and Sciences Building.

In addition to student and Permanent Collection exhibits, the galleries also host shows by award-winning contemporary artists from around the United States and Mexico.

Hours for the new Lamar Gallery will be Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Parking is available in the east parking lot to the right of the Lamar School Building.

Admission to all UTPA gallery exhibits is free. For hours for other UTPA galleries and other information, please contact Innella at 956/381-2655.
