Dr. Linda McCallister, dean of the college, said the faculty and students in the College of Business Administration wanted to recognize Nevárez for his vision and support of the college and its programs.
"Long before I came here, Dr. Miguel Nevárez had a vision. He wanted to achieve educational parity for the people of this Valley," McCallister said. "More than 10 years ago, he and his community partners set out on a quest to bring graduate programs and graduate education to our area….Additionally, he has provided us with the type of support that we need to make this program a success. He has given us academic, emotional and financial support. That’s why we are a success."
Nevárez responded that any success the university has been able to attain has been with the support of the community and groups like the college’s Business Advisory Board.
"The people of this community have really been behind this university, and that shows when I talk to legislators and ask for their help," he said. "It’s extremely important for us to know what your needs are, because we want to develop programs that are going to help this community develop."
The award was presented during a meeting of the Business Advisory Board June 25 on the UT Pan American campus.
