The grant will be used to fund scholarships beginning this fall for students in the university’s rehabilitation counseling master’s degree program.
"This grant is to encourage students to go into the field of rehabilitation counseling," said Dr. Bruce Reed, coordinator of the Rehabilitative Services Program at UT Pan American.
The application deadline for the scholarship is July 1, which is also the application deadline for the master’s degree program. The six students who receive the scholarship will be awarded full paid tuition and fees and a stipend of $800 per month while they are in the program.
"With this scholarship, what we’re saying to students is, ‘Come to school and don’t work full-time while you’re enrolled,’" Reed said.
As a condition of the grant, students will be required to work for two years in an approved rehabilitation agency for every year they received the scholarship.
The grant, coauthored by Reed and Tom Shefcik, coordinator of the undergraduate program in rehabilitative services, is similar to a grant from the same agency that provides scholarship funds for undergraduate students in the program. The undergraduate program grant is $350,000 for five years, or $70,000 per year, and scholarships of $500 per semester for tuition and fees and a $350 monthly stipend to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the program.
