Rick's computerized presentation and lecture, titled "Using Laser Mapping to Explore Early Civilization at Chavin de Huantar, Peru," will include a computer-generated fly-through view of various parts of the site.
Rick is a leading authority on the very early prehistoric cultures of Peru and is a pioneer in the use of computerized technology in the field of archaeology. He has actively investigated the early hunter-gatherer cultures of the Andean area for 25 years.
Chavin de Huantar, located in the north central highlands of Peru, was a famous oracle center for the Chavin culture, which thrived between 500 and 200 B.C. The site is noted for its large mounds made of finely cut stone. The outer faces of these mounds were once adorned with hundreds of stone carvings.
Within two of the largest mounds are numerous narrow galleries that lead to hidden rooms and chambers deep within the mound construction. Because the galleries are so numerous, an accurate map showing the layout of the galleries had never been accomplished until Rick's recent work. Using the latest computerized laser mapping equipment and techniques, Rick and his team of Stanford students spent two field seasons mapping the internal and external features of the site.
