"The Office of Graduate Studies will absorb the responsibilities of the Office of Sponsored Projects, in recognition of the importance of research activity to graduate study," said Dr. Will Davis, interim vice president for academic affairs.
UT Pan American committed to centralizing its support for graduate studies and sponsored research in the recently completed Southern Association of Colleges and Schools reaccreditation.
"The Office of Graduate Studies is one of the ways we are responding to recommendations for more centralized oversight and coordination of graduate programs," said Dr. Ted von Ende, director of institutional research and planning. "The recommendation came in our own self-study, and the visiting reaffirmation committee also recommended it."
As proposed to the UT System, the Office of Graduate Studies would be headed by the associate vice president for academic affairs and graduate programs and planning. The functions and duties of the office would be to approve thesis and dissertation formats as prescribed at the program level, publish theses and dissertations, review policies related to graduate education, oversee the application of current and subsequent graduate policy, assure establishment of graduate assistantship guidelines, and develop and review the Graduate Catalog.
The office would also facilitate a system of graduate advisement, maintain records of graduate faculty, advise the Graduate Council on graduate faculty status and propose policies to the council, assure implementation of graduate policy, assist in the development of graduate proposals, serve as a consultant for changes in graduate programs, work with the Graduate Council and function as a liaison between the council and the vice president for academic affairs, serve as a liaison with the academic deans, supervise the Office of Sponsored Projects, and promote faculty research, creative activities, grants and contracts, and fellowships.
