Students recycle and reuse to create art
In an effort to help raise awareness about the environment, art students at The University of Texas-Pan American spent the past few weeks creating art from recycled materials and found objects to display at a local event commemorating Earth Day, celebrated April 22.

Alumnus Army major general speaks to ROTC battalion cadets about leadership
When United States Army Major General (Retired) William F. Garrison was a student-athlete at then Pan American University in 1966, he said he wasn’t the best basketball player but he would “kill anyone who tried to take his slot.”

Garrison went on to show this tenacity and exemplary leadership qualities as the youngest U.S. Army officer ever to hold the ranks of colonel, brigadier general and major general. He returned to Edinburg April 9 to speak to the current cadets at The University of Texas-Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) during their annual “dining-in” event held at the Museum of South Texas History.

With a strong belief that small businesses are the stimulant for job growth and the U.S. economy, Dr. Alberto Davila, who holds the V.F. and Gertrude M. Neuhaus Chair for Entrepreneurship at The University of Texas-Pan American, is working to cultivate entrepreneurs in the Rio Grande Valley.

Health Sciences and Human Services hosts Student Research Day
Undergraduate and graduate students from the UTPA College of Health Sciences and Human Services (COHSHS) had the opportunity to showcase their research topics and posters during the college's third annual Student Research Day Thursday, April 16 at the University Library Lobby. More than 20 research posters were displayed during the event, which was coordinated and judged by the COHSHS Faculty Research Committee.

UTPA NASCAR Kinetics team steers their race viewing event to success
Teamwork was the key to not only NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon’s win in the Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway April 5 but also the success of a race viewing party put together by The University of Texas-Pan American NASCAR Kinetics team which drew nearly 1,000 people.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at UTPA held their second annual El ABC de la Ciencia (The ABC’s of Science) workshop Monday, April 6 at The University of Texas-Pan American for 96 invited kindergarten through second grade students from surrounding schools in the Edinburg and McAllen area

ALUMNI:1996 graduate engineers successful career at Raytheon
Mauricio Salinas may have launched his career at Raytheon, but his foundation was built at The University of Texas-Pan American where he received his bachelor’s in mechanical engineering in 1996. Today, Salinas, a state registered professional engineer, is a principle mechanical engineer in the Thermal Design Group at Raytheon’s Network Centric Systems Company in McKinney, Texas.
