Graphic design student recognized as the Most Promising Minority Student
Christopher Ramirez, a senior graphic design major at The University of Texas-Pan American, has had a passion for advertising since he was a senior in high school. In February, Ramirez will be recognized as one of the American Advertising Federation’s (AAF) Most Promising Minority Students (MPMS) in the country for his dedication to the field.

UTPA reps visit premier North Carolina research park as model for local effort
Officials from The University of Texas-Pan American were part of contingent from the Rio South Texas Region who visited the Research Triangle Park in Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina Jan. 27-28 to learn how to best develop a similar technology research and development park planned for a site in McAllen.

UTPA professor receives major grant to improve cancer research

Winter Writers Workshops offered to the community
Calling all writers! Professors at The University of Texas-Pan American will be offering low cost, intensive writing workshops on campus this winter open to every member of the community. Courses will be taught in memoir writing, poetry writing, screenwriting, and fiction writing by Emmy Pérez and Dr. Phil Zwerling, both assistant professors in the MFA graduate program in creative writing.

UTPA Transfer Center offers convenient transfer information for STC students
The University of Texas-Pan American has now made it easier for students to transfer from a two-year college to the University through the help of the newly opened UTPA Transfer Center.


Students ride for free with Rio Metro
Public transportation for students at The University of Texas-Pan American will be free thanks to a partnership the University has started with the Rio Metro Urban Transportation System, a service provided by the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council (LRGVDC). Students with a valid University ID will be able to take advantage of the bus system.

Memorial Service to honor Dr. Hashim Salman Mahdi set for Thursday
The University of Texas-Pan American College of Science and Engineering will honor the life and career of Dr. Hashim Salman Mahdi, chair and professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, who passed away suddenly at the age of 56 on Jan. 6 with a memorial service scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 15, noon-2 p.m. in the Engineering Auditorium, Rm. 1.300.
