All-female mariachi group wins first national title
The all-female mariachi group – Mariachi Femenil – at The University of Texas-Pan American showed they could play with the big boys in the usually all-male musical tradition when they were crowned the national champions in the university division of the 15th Annual Mariachi Spectacular in Albuquerque, New Mexico July 8.

Representatives from The University of Texas-Pan American recently attended the second strategic planning meeting for the third Minority Serving Institutions Research Partnerships (MSIRP) Conference scheduled for Feb. 2-4, 2006 at UTPA – the first time the conference will be held at a Hispanic Serving Institution.

Ten students receive UTPA’s first Valley Heroes Memorial Scholarships
Ten students at The University of Texas-Pan American were recently awarded a $1,000 Valley Heroes Memorial Scholarship to help with the cost of their education.

Reidhead named new dean for Social and Behavioral Sciences
Dr. Van A. Reidhead, associate professor of anthropology and education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL), has been named the new dean for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at The University of Texas-Pan American.

New dormitory set for construction in August 2005
The University of Texas-Pan American is preparing to start construction on its latest project this fall – the new 108,965 square-foot dormitory – set to open in August 2006. The new residence hall will be the fourth addition to UTPA’s current housing, which includes Troxel and Womens Residence Halls, and Bronc Village Apartments. The dormitory will be located on Sugar Road, south of Bronc Village.


Child Development Center set to open in August
Opening day for The University of Texas-Pan American Child Development Center is scheduled for early August with more than 140 little Broncs set to occupy the new 11,177 square-foot building.


Funds for Miguel A. Nevárez Endowed Chair at UTPA reach $1 million
The University of Texas-Pan American announced at a June 21 press conference that the University had raised $1 million for the establishment of the Miguel A. Nevárez Endowed Chair for the College of Education.
