El Río exhibition nears end of successful run on UTPA campus
El Río – the binational, bilingual traveling Smithsonian exhibition celebrating the cultural heritage along the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo River – will end its four month stay at The University of Texas-Pan American Dec. 13. The only other Texas exhibition site will be El Paso later next year while the nearest exhibition site in Mexico will be Monterrey, where it will travel to next.

UTPA Border Health Office kicks-off Diabetes Awareness Month
In an effort to promote Diabetes Awareness Month, The University of Texas-Pan American’s Border Health Office seeks to increase enrollment of fourth graders in the School Education and Enrollment Project (SEEP). The program is designed to teach students about diabetes, its symptoms and how to prevent the onset of Type 2 Diabetes and it relies on students to deliver the message to their parents, relatives and neighbors.


Nursing students from Mexico spend week at UTPA
Eight nursing students from the Universidad Autonoma de Tamualipas (UAT) spent the week, Nov. 3-8, at The University of Texas-Pan American as part of a partnership between the universities to help create better academic opportunities on both sides of the border.

UTPA enrollment growth ranked high among Texas four-year institutions
The University of Texas-Pan American is one of three Hispanic Serving Institutions in the State of Texas that reported the highest headcount growth for the fall 2003 semester, according to preliminary figures provided by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Society of Manufacturing Engineers sweep awards at Region 11 conference
The University of Texas-Pan American’s Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) won first place in four of the five categories; Overall, Oral Presentation, Web Site Design and Table Top Display at the recent Region 11 SME Student Conference. The conference includes the states of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Twelve schools participated and more than 100 students, including 11 UTPA students, competed in San Antonio.

State Employees Charitable Campaign celebrates 10-year anniversary
In 1993, the Texas Legislature created the State Employees Charitable Campaign (SECC).


UTPA professor awarded Fulbright to India
George McLemore, an associate professor of communication at The University of Texas-Pan American, will travel to India for the second time on a Fulbright award to share his knowledge of communication, photojournalism, media and culture with students at the Mudra Institute of Communication in Ahmedabad, the seventh largest city in India.

After more than five years of planning, The University of Texas-Pan American will begin construction of a new education complex.


First annual intramural flag football championship held at UTPA
The Intramural Recreational Sports Department at The University of Texas- Pan American hosted the first annual Valley Bowl Intramural Flag Football Championship at the new UTPA Intramural Recreation Fields on Saturday, November 1.
