UTPA gears up for historical presidential election

The University of Texas-Pan American opened its seventh annual Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) Week with a day especially dedicated to teachers, superintendents and administrators Monday, Sept. 22 at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

“A T. Rex Named Sue” exhibit opens at UTPA Visitors Center
Rio Grande Valley residents have been seeing glimpses of this large creature for weeks on billboards and in media ads. She has finally taken up her temporary residence as one of the newest members of The University of Texas-Pan American community. She is Sue, the most complete and best preserved specimen of a Tyrannosaurus rex ever discovered.

Campus event honoring Constitution Day focuses on media’s role in elections
More than 125 students, faculty and staff members at The University of Texas-Pan American commemorated national Constitution Day, officially on Sept. 17, by attending “The Great Election Debate: How the Media Can Sway Votes and Win Elections” held Sept. 15 in the UTPA Student Union Theater.

UTPA awarded $599,990 by HUD for outreach to Delta Region communities
The University of Texas-Pan American is among 10 Hispanic-Serving Institutions across the United States recently awarded funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help revitalize neighborhoods, promote affordable housing and stimulate economic development in their communities. UTPA will receive $599,990 of the $6 million in awards that were announced by HUD Secretary Steve Preston on Sept. 9.

Golden Key International Honour Society hosts school supply drive
Student members of the Golden Key International Honour Society at The University of Texas-Pan American started the fall 2008 semester off by hosting a school supply drive to help local elementary students.

The University of Texas-Pan American welcomed a dozen local media outlets, who were the first to get a glimpse of the newest member of the UTPA family – "A T. Rex Named Sue" – at the Visitors Center Friday, Sept. 12 during Media Day.

Electrical engineering students design first integrated chip
For 27-year-old graduate student, Waleed M. Ebrahim, his decision to come to the United States from the Kingdom of Bahrain, and attend The University of Texas-Pan American, was based not only on the cost of living and tuition, but in the quality of UTPA’s electical engineering program. Ebrahim along with 14 electrical engineering students participating in the program, designed UTPA’s first student integrated chip (IC), which is a necessity in all electronic devices.
