UTPA's Got Intelligence? camp introduces students to unique careers
The University of Texas-Pan American Integrated Global Knowledge and Understanding (IGkNU) sponsored the second annual Got Intelligence? summer camp for 40 Rio Grande Valley top 10 percent high school students July 14-18.

UTPA opens doors to National Guard and H-E-B associates providing post hurricane assistance
While its campus was closed July 23-25 during Hurricane Dolly’s march across the Rio Grande Valley, The University of Texas-Pan American opened its doors Thursday, July 24 to assist the National Guard and H-E-B associates who came to aid South Texas communities and residents in the aftermath of the storm.

Campus to Close Due to Tropical Storm Dolly

The University of Texas-Pan American will officially close the campus and cancel all activities beginning at 5 p.m. this afternoon, Tuesday, July 22 due to Tropical Storm Dolly and inclement weather predicted for South Texas. The University will remain closed all day Wednesday, July 23 and Thursday, July 24 until 4 p.m. when evening classes resume unless conditions warrant reassessment. UTPA will return to regular office hours on Friday, July 25.

2007-2008 Panorama wins awards at AEJMC competition
The 2007-2008 edition of the student magazine Panorama at The University of Texas-Pan American received a top honor recently at the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) national student magazine competition. The publication received first place in design, honorable mention for editorial content, and honorable mention for a service and information article. The Panorama staff will be presented with the awards in Chicago Aug. 7.

UTPA Athletics joins Great West Conference
The University of Texas-Pan American celebrated a landmark decision during a press conference, Friday, July 11, to join the Great West Conference, an all-sports league, which will provide a home for 11 of 14 UTPA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics programs.

VAMOS and UTPA Foundation collaborate on $2 million scholarship program for South Texas students
The University of Texas-Pan American Foundation (UTPAF) and the Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships (VAMOS) announced today they will team up to establish a $2 million Matching Endowed Scholarship Program for graduating Hidalgo County high school seniors planning to attend UTPA.

Nursing department chair receives 2008 American Nurses Association award
Dr. Carolina Huerta, MSN, RN, who chairs the Department of Nursing at The University of Texas-Pan American, was awarded one of the most prestigious honors in the nursing profession June 26 – the American Nurses Association (ANA) 2008 Mary E. Mahoney Award.

Students to participate in national law school preparation scholars program
Thirteen students from The University of Texas-Pan American will have the opportunity this summer to learn more about law school and get a head start on the law school application process by their participation in one of two scholar’s programs offered by the Council on Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO), both designed to prepare more minority students to enter legal fields.

UTPA hosts First Generation Summer Academic Camp for high school students
Fifty Rio Grande Valley high school students participated in the First Generation Summer Academic Camp at The University of Texas-Pan American June 27-29.

The camp, hosted by the Tech Prep Program in partnership with Cameron Works and the UTPA Valley Outreach Center, was for students who will be the first in their families to attend college and pursue a higher education.
