UTPA students perform well at American Society of Mechanical Engineers competition
In the face of recent dusty winds, there are many South Texans who’d like to find a way to have their dirty windows cleaned automatically. When given this challenge, a team of mechanical engineering students at The University of Texas-Pan American wiped up with a second place finish for its design of an automated window washing robot at the 2008 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) district conference held April 17-19.

University ranks third in the nation in awarding master's degrees to Hispanics
The University of Texas-Pan American ranks third in the nation in graduate schools awarding master’s degrees to Hispanics according to recent rankings by The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine.


UTPA students win more than 30 awards at Texas Intercollegiate Press Association competition
Student publications and media at The University of Texas-Pan American – The Panorama Magazine, The Pan American Newspaper, and Bronc Radio and TV – were big winners at the recent 2008 Texas Intercollegiate Press Association statewide competition at Texas A&M University-College Station bringing home more than 30 awards including first in the state for literary magazine and best of show in its newspaper division.

UTPA to offer high school students the "total university experience" during summer
The University of Texas-Pan American wants to give academically talented South Texas high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to get the “Total University Experience” through its innovative Concurrent Enrollment Summer Housing Program.

One hundred-ten students at The University of Texas-Pan American registered to vote during the Rock the Vote Block Party at UTPA’s Unity Hall Tuesday, April 22.


Ballet Folklórico to present Invitational Dance Concert May 2
The University of Texas-Pan American Ballet Folklórico will present the “Escaparate 2008” Invitational Dance Concert Friday, May 2, 7:30 p.m. at the Fine Arts Auditorium. The dance concert will feature invited guests La Joya Ann Richards Middle School Grupo Folklórico and Hidalgo Aída Díaz Jr. High Grupo Folklórico, who will perform with the UTPA Ballet Folklórico as part of a cultural exchange and community outreach project.


Provost honors faculty for support of Latin American Studies
Six faculty members from The University of Texas-Pan American were recognized with the annual Provost's Awards for Latin American Studies during a luncheon held April 16 as part of Pan American Days, April 14-17, at the University. The award acknowledges and honors faculty members who have promoted international studies and programs through their teaching, research and community service.


UTPA’s Brainstorming Contest fosters entrepreneurial spirit in students
Students at The University of Texas-Pan American explored their entrepreneurial talents during the College of Business Administration’s Brainstorming Contest where they were challenged to add value to an old CD. The purpose of the contest was to get students thinking in unconventional ways, as well as encourage leadership and teamwork.

UTPA receives $1.2 million grant to support creative science education
The University of Texas-Pan American will continue to bring real-world lab experiences to rural South Texas middle-school students with the receipt of a $1.2 million grant announced April 22 from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), the nation’s largest private supporter of science education.

Thirteen UTPA students choose community service work during spring break
Ana Villaurrutia's spring break March 10-14 away from her studies at The University of Texas-Pan American was a blast, she said, but it did not involve basking lazily in the sun, drinking too many margaritas or partying into the wee hours of the morning.Villaurrutia was among 13 UTPA students who participated in one of two community service projects under the University's Alternative Breaks program during their annual spring break.
