Career Services collaborates to develop South Texas advisory committee
The University of Texas-Pan American Office of Career Services has partnered with the South Texas College (STC) Job Placement Office to create the Career Employment Advisory Committee of South Texas to increase career opportunities for students and alumni, and economic growth potential for the community.

UTPA and UAT sign an agreement of cooperation
The University of Texas-Pan American and La Universidad Atutónoma De Tamaulipas (UAT), Mexico signed an agreement of cooperation to establish a program of exchange and collaboration in areas of interest and benefit to both institutions.

UTPA honors Valley Teachers of the Year
Forty-two teachers recognized as Teachers of the Year from 21 Rio Grande Valley school districts were honored Nov. 9 at the second annual Teacher of the Year Awards banquet sponsored by The University of Texas-Pan American College of Education and the Office of the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services.

UTPA-UT Austin Cooperative Pharmacy Program hosts open house Nov. 28
The Cooperative Pharmacy Program at The University of Texas-Pan American and The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy will host an open house Tuesday, Nov. 28 from 6-8 p.m. at The University of Texas Health Science Center of San Antonio Regional Health Center (RAHC) on the UTPA campus.

Ballet Folklórico begins ALEGRIA 2006-2007 concert season Dec. 2
The University of Texas-Pan American Ballet Folklórico will begin its annual concert series ALEGRIA 2006-2007 Dec. 2, 8 p.m. at the Fine Arts Auditorium. The concert series will continue Feb. 2, 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 3-4, 2 p.m.; Feb. 9, 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 10-11, 2 p.m.

The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Modern Languages and Literature, Department of English and the Office of International Programs hosted the first International Conference on Caribbean Studies at South Padre Island Nov. 2-5.

University celebrates International Week 2006
The University of Texas-Pan American kicked off International Week 2006 Monday, Nov. 13 with a performance by the Barynya: Russian Folk Dance and Music Ensemble in the Student Union Theater. UTPA celebrates its sixth annual International Week, Nov. 13-17, with speakers, workshops and discussion sessions that highlight a week of education and culture from all continents.


UTPA vice president awarded TACRAO’s top honor
Dr. John Edwards, vice president of the Division of Enrollment and Student Services at The University of Texas-Pan American, was honored Nov. 5 with the President’s Award at the annual conference of the Texas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (TACRAO) held Nov. 4-8 in Austin.


UTPA hosts P-16 Summit to address college readiness
More than 250 Rio Grande Valley educators and administrators gathered at The University of Texas-Pan American Nov. 2 to participate in the inaugural P-16 Summit – a conference designed to address the issue of college readiness among students in the Valley.

Walgreens awards scholarships to 19 UTPA pre-pharmacy students
Nineteen students from The University of Texas-Pan American and The University of Texas at Austin Cooperative Pharmacy Program were each awarded a $1,500 scholarship from Walgreens during a reception Oct. 19 in the University Ballroom.

Go Apply Day at UTPA set for Nov. 16
The University of Texas-Pan American Valley Outreach Center will host Go Apply Day Thursday Nov. 16 in conjunction with the designation of November as Go Apply or College Application Awareness Month for High School Seniors by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

UTPA Dance Ensemble performs Nov. 16-19
The University of Texas-Pan American Dance Ensemble will present its annual Fall Concert Nov. 16-18, 7:30 p.m. and Nov.19, 2 p.m. in the UTPA Fine Arts Auditorium. The concert will include works by guest artists Carley Conder and Adrienne Clancy as well as new works by UTPA Dance Ensemble Artistic Directors Melinda Blomquist and Dana Shackelford.

Two new federal grant programs to assist UTPA students
The University of Texas-Pan American Student Financial Services Office is currently offering Pell Grant-eligible students two new federal grants – the Academic Competitiveness Grant (AC Grant) and the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (SMART Grant) – during the 2006-2007 academic year.


UTPA Make a Difference Day project helps Boys and Girls Club facility
More than 130 students from The University of Texas-Pan American joined 100 other volunteers from the University staff, Boys and Girls Club members and people from the community to make a big difference at the Alamo/San Juan Boys and Girls Club facility during the national Make a Difference Day Oct. 28.


Conference targets Valley nursing faculty shortage
To help develop a pool of much-needed nursing faculty for Rio Grande Valley higher education institutions, The University of Texas-Pan American recently joined South Texas College (STC) and The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College (UTB/TSC) in organizing and hosting a Nursing Faculty Development Conference.
