UTPA to host seminar on recruiting graduate students
The University of Texas-Pan American Office of Graduate Studies will host an all-day seminar – “101 Great Ideas for Recruiting Graduate Students” – Monday, Nov. 2 at the International Trade and Technology Building, International Room.


Charlie Haffner to speak about Amistad slave revolt Nov. 7 at UTPA
The University of Texas-Pan American invites the public to attend a free presentation on Tuesday, Nov. 7 by Charlie Haffner, a world-renown playwright, oral historian and songwriter from the West African nation Sierra Leone, who will speak about “Sengbe Pieh Comes Home: The Amistad Slave Revolt from an African Perspective.”

Ballet Folklórico awarded TCA Touring Company and Artist Status
The Ballet Folklórico at The University of Texas-Pan American was one of 100 outstanding state artists chosen for inclusion on the Texas Commission for the Arts (TCA) 2006-2008 Touring Arts Program, which will be made available to performing arts presenters throughout Texas.

Louis Gossett Jr. to open 2006-2007 Distinguished Speakers Series Oct. 30
Louis Gossett Jr., best known for his role as Fiddler in the 1977 mini-series “Roots,” and for his role as a military sergeant in the 1982 film “An Officer and a Gentleman,” will open the 2006-2007 Distinguished Speakers Series Oct. 30 at The University of Texas-Pan American.

University exceeds national average in student retention rates
The University of Texas-Pan American reported a record-high retention rate of 72.7 percent for fall 2005 to fall 2006 that has surpassed the national average announced UTPA President Dr. Blandina Cárdenas Wednesday, Oct. 11.

UTPA volunteers to participate in national Make a Difference Day Oct. 28
Students, faculty and staff at The University of Texas-Pan American will join millions of Americans across the country Saturday, Oct. 28 helping to improve their communities and to assist neighbors in need during national Make a Difference Day.


Assistive Technology students create inventions
Students in an assistive technology course this summer at The University of Texas-Pan American, had the opportunity to create some innovative items to assist individuals with disabilities while at work, home and in the community.

On Oct. 2, UTPA kicked off its annual State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC), which will run through Oct. 13, 2006.

UTPA awarded $2.5 million federal grant
The University of Texas-Pan American has established its first federally designated center on campus through a $2.5 million government grant. The Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excellence will provide resources to better prepare South Texas students to successfully compete in all sectors of the global economy.
