UTPA to co-host substance abuse recovery conference Sept. 15
The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Rehabilitation in partnership with the UTPA Student Development Office, the UTPA Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program, UTPA Student Health Services, Rio Grande Valley Council, Inc. and Palmer Drug Abuse Program will host the Voices for Recovery Conference and Involvement Fair Thursday, Sept. 15, from 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the UTPA Student Union Theater.

Smart classroom technology comes to UT Pan American
Students and faculty at The University of Texas-Pan American during Summer Session II were among the first to reap the benefits from the installation of “Smart Classroom” technology into 32 classrooms in 10 separate buildings on campus this year.


UTPA officials attend SACS accreditation orientation in Atlanta
Dr. Blandina Cárdenas, president of The University of Texas-Pan American and four other UTPA representatives recently traveled to Atlanta for an overview of the reaffirmation process for accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the regional accreditation agency for the Southern region of the United States.

U.S. Department of Education awards funding to UTPA GEAR UP
The University of Texas-Pan American was recently selected by the U.S. Department of Education to receive funding for the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program (GEAR UP) Project to continue its efforts in helping South Texas youth pursue a post-secondary education.

UTPA student branch of American Society for Quality hosts conference
The University of Texas-Pan American student branch of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) will host its first conference Saturday, August 27, 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. in the Engineering Building Auditorium.


Premedical students benefit from donor's generosity
Dr. Blandina Cárdenas (right), president of The University of Texas-Pan American, recently met with Anna Marie Malick (left), longtime resident of the Rio Grande Valley, to thank her for donating several pieces of jewelry to the UTPA Foundation which was appraised at $143,000.

Auditions for first university theatre play announced
Noted Latina playwright Milcha Sanchez-Scott will hold auditions Wednesday, August 17 and Thursday, August 18 for her play “The Old Matador,” the first University Theatre fall Main Stage production at The University of Texas-Pan American.


Russian National Baseball Team visits UTPA campus
Members of the Russian National Baseball Team ages 15-16 toured the campus of The University of Texas-Pan American August 11 while in Edinburg practicing for the AA World Youth Baseball Championships to be held in Monterrey, Mexico August 17-29.

UTPA announces schedule of events and speakers for HESTEC 2005
With science and engineering employment opportunities increasing three times faster than all other occupations, The University of Texas-Pan American, in conjunction with the Office of Congressman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) are gearing up to prepare students for those careers during Hispanic Science, Engineering and Technology (HESTEC) Week, Sept. 25-Oct. 1.

Shell Oil donation benefits Tex PREP at UTPA
The University of Texas-Pan American was presented a $5,000 check July 22 by representatives of the Shell Exploration and Production Company continuing the eighth year of support by the Shell Oil Foundation to the University’s Texas Pre-freshman Engineering Program (Tex PREP).
