The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine’s annual review of the Top 100 Colleges for Hispanics ranked The University of Texas-Pan American second in the nation in the number of bachelor’s degrees and eighth in the number of master’s degrees awarded to Hispanics.

The University of Texas-Pan American was one of 80 colleges and universities in Texas which recently received a donation from ExxonMobil through the ExxonMobil Foundation’s 2004 Educational Matching Gift Program.

UTPA commencement set for May 14
This spring semester, prospective graduates at The University of Texas-Pan American will participate in four spring commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 14 at the UTPA Fieldhouse.

The 1,617 prospective graduates for degrees include 1,310 for bachelor’s, 298 candidates for master’s and nine for doctoral degrees.

Beta Gamma Sigma inducts UTPA students and faculty at April 19 ceremony
The College of Business Administration at The University of Texas-Pan American inducted 41 graduate and undergraduate students as well as three faculty members into Beta Gamma Sigma at an April 19 induction ceremony.

Tours of Project Enhance AT Lab available to school districts and parents
Special education departments from school districts across the Rio Grande Valley are invited to visit the Project Enhance Assistive Technology (AT) Lab at The University of Texas-Pan American to examine and learn about the different types of assistive technology located there.

New endowment fund will support lecture series focused on social work education
Social work education in the Rio Grande Valley got an important boost March 29 with the establishment of the Max and Alma Barrera Siporin Endowed Social Work Education Fund as a permanent endowment for the Department of Social Work in the College of Health and Human Services at The University of Texas-Pan American. The Fund will be subordinate to the Hermila Anzaldua Lecture Series Fund.

Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs visits UTPA campus
More than 400 people filled the Student Union Theater at The University of Texas-Pan American April 14 to hear and ask questions of one of Mexico’s leading government officials, Dr. Luis Ernesto Derbez Bautista, secretary of Foreign Affairs, Mexico’s equivalent of the U.S. Secretary of State.

Local second graders learn about UTPA campus
Liz Pedroza, a junior general studies major at The University of Texas-Pan American and tour guide at the Visitors Center, showed the campus to a class of second graders from Travis Elementary School in Mercedes, Texas. Pedroza explained the purpose of each of the buildings to the students, who came to the campus on a field trip.

UTPA currently accepting applications for graduate school
According to the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, bachelor’s degree holders earned more than 60 percent more than high school graduates, while people with master’s degrees earned more than 92 percent more in 2003. At The University of Texas-Pan American, the opportunity to eventually land in this upper-earning level is available to students by applying to one of 45 master’s programs it offers.
