UTPA awarded grant to create campus garden
Imagine a garden on campus where you can enjoy the sunshine, eat lunch outdoors or study native fauna and flora. The University of Texas-Pan American was recently awarded a grant by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) for the formation of an Indigenous Wildscape Garden which will allow students, faculty, staff and visitors to do just that.

Nursing professor receives prestigious award
The American Assembly for Men in Nursing has recently awarded its most prestigious honor, the Luther Christman Award, to Dr. Bruce Wilson, professor in the Department of Nursing at The University of Texas-Pan American.

UTPA appoints interim deans for two colleges
The University of Texas-Pan American recently appointed two interim deans – Dr. Wallace E. Tucker to the College of Arts and Humanities and Dr. Velma Menchaca to the College of Education – after administrative changes were made in both colleges early this month.

UTPA Baseball team to host golf tournament Jan. 22
The University of Texas-Pan American Bronc Baseball team is hosting the Second Annual Baseball Scholarship Golf Tournament Saturday, Jan. 22 at the Monte Cristo Golf Course and Country Club in Edinburg with celebrity guest, current Houston Astros pitching coach and former UTPA Bronc standout Jim Hickey.

UTPA to host Poet Laureate of the United States Feb. 3
On Feb. 3 Rio Grande Valley lovers of literature will have the opportunity to hear the Poet Laureate of the United States, Ted Kooser, during a public reading of his works at The University of Texas-Pan American. Hosted by the UTPA English Department, the event will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Union Auditorium and is free and open to the public.

Exhibit commemorates 400th anniversary of literary work
Don’t miss the opportunity to view a showcase of works related to the literary piece, “El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha,” in The University of Texas Pan-American Library lobby Wednesday, Feb. 2.

UTPA announces administrative changes in two colleges
The University of Texas-Pan American Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Rodolfo Arévalo, has announced today the reassignment of two deans at the University – Dr. Rodolfo Rocha, dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, and Dr. Hilda Medrano, dean of the College of Education. Both have been placed on a semester-long development leave to restart their engagement in research and teaching said Arévalo.

University Drive under construction; students encouraged to use new routes
With the first day of the spring semester underway at The University of Texas-Pan American, an increased number of motorists are on the road and experiencing the construction near campus.

UTPA offers extended office hours for spring semester
The University of Texas-Pan American will offer extended office hours to assist students during the start of the spring 2005 semester. UTPA will keep key offices open for the convenience of students on the following days: Jan. 10-14 and Jan. 18-20. Administrative offices will remain open to 7 p.m.

Cárdenas meets with local organization
The University of Texas Pan-American President Dr. Blandina Cárdenas was honored at a reception hosted by A Resource in Serving Equality (ARISE) Dec. 8 in Las Milpas. ARISE, initiated in 1987, is a program dedicated to developing colonia communities by offering activities for infants to adults. Cárdenas shared her plans as the new president and also talked to parents and children about how the University operates and the opportunities available to students pursuing a higher education.

The University of Texas-Pan American Foundation will be hosting the 23rd Annual Estate Planning Seminars beginning Jan. 9, 2005.
