UTPA accounting team wins national audit competition in Chicago
A team of five female accounting students from The University of Texas-Pan American was the “last team standing” when they recently won a national audit case competition sponsored by KPMG, one of the four largest accounting firms in the world, and the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA).

UTPA begins 2004 fall semester
The University of Texas-Pan American fall 2004 semester is off to a good start with more than 16,000 students registered. The number is expected to increase to more than 17,000 as students continue to register.

Cárdenas takes center stage at annual Fall Convocation
For her debut as president of the fifth largest university in The University of Texas System, Dr. Blandina “Bambi” Cárdenas, the first woman leader of The University of Texas-Pan American, took center stage at the 2004 Fall Convocation Friday, Aug. 20 at the Student Union Theatre.

Field trips provide hands on experiences for TES students
From sighting birds and butterflies at the World Birding Center (WBC) in Edinburg to learning about oil spill effects and management while traveling about in air boats at the port in Brownsville, students in the 2004 Teaching Environmental Sciences (TES) class at The University of Texas-Pan American will bring hands-on educational experiences about local and national environmental issues to their classrooms this fall.

Groundbreaking for UTPA daycare center set for Aug. 17
The University of Texas-Pan American will break ground Tuesday, Aug. 17 for its newest facility – a Child Development Center – which will serve 140 little Broncs ranging in ages from three-months to four-years-old.


CAMP and HEP receive U.S. Department of Education grants
The High School Equivalency Program (HEP) and College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) at The University of Texas-Pan American were recently awarded two grants worth a total of about $4 million each by the U.S. Department of Education that will help students from migrant or seasonal farm worker families attain their GED or a higher education.

UTPA receives $972,000 grant from LSAMP
The University of Texas-System Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) was recently approved for a $972,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to be used for a Bridge to the Doctorate Program to be administered by The University of Texas-Pan American-LSAMP.

WAF receives donation from SAM’S CLUB
The University of Texas-Pan American Women’s Athletics Fundraisers received a $250 donation from SAM’S CLUB Tuesday, August 3 to be used towards this year’s fundraiser event – The Roaring Twenties Gala.

New UTPA health education coordinator to focus on student wellness
As one of the first steps in establishing an initiative to promote student health and wellness, the Office of Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services at The University of Texas-Pan American has authorized the hiring of a Health Education Coordinator III who will work out of Student Health Services.


Learning Frameworks course now required for UTPA freshmen
Starting this fall semester 2004, all incoming freshmen at The University of Texas-Pan American with 30 hours or less will be required to complete a new course called Learning Frameworks, intended to enhance student success in college.
