Nevárez prepares for final commencement ceremonies of presidency
The University of Texas-Pan American commencement ceremonies are set for May 7-8 and will feature more than 1,500 graduates preparing to receive their degrees at the UTPA Fieldhouse. The ceremonies will also mark UTPA President Miguel A. Nevárez's final graduations of his presidency.

Exhibit recognizes Nevárez contribution to LSAMP program
The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) at The University of Texas-Pan American is holding an exhibition of the program this April in recognition of UTPA President Dr. Miguel A. Nevárez’s contributions to the program. The exhibit, located in the Math Lab at MAGC 3.510, also highlights research done over the past 11 years by participants in LSAMP’s student research program.

Twenty-fifth annual honors convocation recognizes student scholars and leaders
Twenty-five years ago, The University of Texas-Pan American President, Dr. Miguel A. Nevárez, then vice president of student affairs, initiated the first Awards and Recognition Convocation and reception recognizing outstanding scholars and student leaders. On Sunday, April 4, Nevárez presided over his last as the University’s president before a crowded Student Union Theater filled with the honorees and their families and friends.


UTPA’s student health services awarded national accreditation
Student Health Services at The University of Texas-Pan American was recently awarded accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc. (AAAHC), a national organization based in Chicago that accredits ambulatory health care organizations. UTPA’s Student Health Services is one of only six student health centers accredited in Texas.


Oracle implementation plan on target; CRM goes live June 2004
A portion of The University of Texas-Pan American’s new Oracle based computer systems and processes will soon “go live” as the University enters the next phase of the $10 million, multi-year implementation plan to replace and enhance the University’s current administrative and new student and visitor services computer systems.


Lacks donates $25,000 to establish Horacio Peña endowed scholarship
Horacio Peña was a hard working, dedicated and loyal employee well-liked by his company and its customers. When he died at the age of 59, his employer, Lacks Valley Stores, wanted to do something to honor him. This honor was bestowed on Peña March 29 when Lacks presented The University of Texas-Pan American Foundation a check for $25,000 to establish the Horacio Peña Endowed Scholarship.

A referendum for the establishment of a new Wellness-Recreation Center on The University of Texas-Pan American campus is one step closer to becoming a reality.


Five UTPA accounting students win regional competition in Houston
A team of five accounting students from The University of Texas-Pan American won a regional audit case competition held in Houston March 26. The competition was co-sponsored by KPMG, one of the four largest accounting firms in the world, and the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA).
