UTPA student named intern of the year by Enterprise Rent-A-Car
Enthusiasm and hard work has paid off for Hazel Alonso, a senior at The University of Texas-Pan American majoring in international business management. Alonso has been named Intern of the Year by Enterprise Rent-A-Car in District 52, which encompasses all the area in Texas south of San Antonio.

UT System announces national search for UTPA president
The University of Texas System announced the start of a national search for the president of The University of Texas-Pan American Monday, Aug. 25 after Dr. Miguel A. Nevárez, the longest seated Hispanic president of a four-year college or university in the United States, recently announced he was stepping down from his duties as UTPA president.

More than 70 officers of student organizations at The University of Texas-Pan American attended the annual Summer Student Leaders Retreat Aug. 18 - 19 on the UTPA campus. The retreat was organized and sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students, the Student Government Association and the Student Development Office.

UTPA Rio Grande City extension center will begin offering courses Sept. 1. UTPA administrators and Starr County officials host a grand opening and open house for the Starr County Upper Level Center Wednesday, Aug. 20 at 6 p.m.

UTPA President named to list of distinguished Hispanics in U.S.

“El Río” Smithsonian exhibition now open to the public
More than 100 people attended the long awaited ribbon cutting and grand opening Monday, August 4, of El Río, a Smithsonian traveling exhibition, making its first stop at The University of Texas-Pan American. Given the ribbon cutting honors were some of the local residents featured in the vignettes depicting life along the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo basin – ranchers David and Omar Champion, Farmworkers Union leader Juanita Valdez Cox and Projecto Axteca Director David Arizmendis.
