Winners of Solar Car competition are rewarded with laptop computers
Christmas came early for a number of ninth graders from Progresso, Harlingen and Los Fresnos – who took top honors at a solar car competition held during Hispanic Engineering Science and Technology Week this year at The University of Texas-Pan American.

UTPA students bring home first place in weight lifting competition
Cody Colchado and company have done it again. The University of Texas at Pan American student, his coach and a workout companion have all taken top honors at two different heavy weight lifting competitions in Reno, Nevada, November 16 and Czechoslovakia in mid September.


UTPA Concert Band to perform Nov. 26
The University of Texas-Pan American Concert Band will present a concert Tuesday, Nov. 26 in the Fine Arts Auditorium, 8 p.m. – which will feature works important to the wind band repertoire and also exhibit the power, sensitivity and tonal colors of the modern wind band.

Global Week 2002 – Asia and Europe in the 21st Century
The University of Texas-Pan American Center for International Studies is getting ready to kick off Global Week 2002 with this year’s conference to focus on ‘Asia and Europe in the 21st Century”, Nov. 18-22.

Global Week is a cultural celebration held annually at UTPA under the direction of Dr. Gilbert Cardenas, assistant vice president for International Studies.


Texas Spanish heritage celebrated at first of its kind conference
The Spanish who first set foot in the Rio Grande Valley in the 1500s have impacted this country’s menu, vocabulary, wardrobe and even its laws. But historians who took part in a Spanish Texas Conference held at The University of Texas-Pan American, Nov. 14, say the problem is most people don’t know about it.

Rio Grande Valley campaign to promote statewide education plan plants seeds, promises to nurture students
An unprecedented statewide campaign designed to help meet the state’s mandate to enroll 500,000 Texans in higher education by the year 2015 has been spreading through various regions of the state since the “College for Texans” campaign was unveiled in Austin Tuesday.

College for Texans campaign to encourage Valley students
A College for Texans campaign will kick off Thursday, Nov. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Med High Biblioteca Las Americas, located at Mile 2 west at Expressway 83 in Mercedes, as part of Closing the Gaps by 2015, which was mandated by Senate Bill 573 of the 2001 Texas Legislature.

The University of Texas-Pan American announces its newest arrival on campus. Café a la Cart opened its kiosks and began serving students in the UTPA library lobby at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11. The aroma of coffee and the line of students waiting to buy food and drink filled the lobby.

UTPA College of Education receives $1.5 million grant for teacher certification program
The University of Texas-Pan American College of Education was awarded $1.5 million from the U.S. Department of Education Wednesday, Nov. 6. The funds are for the Supporting Teachers Across Rural Schools (STARS) program, a five-year program that will assist local education agencies in addressing the teacher shortage in rural school districts.

UTPA dedicates new Visitors Center and unveils bronze Bronc
In spite of the dreary weather, hundreds of Rio Grande Valley residents celebrated The University of Texas-Pan American’s 75th anniversary, Saturday, Nov. 2. The celebration included the dedication of the newest facility on campus, the 7,200 square-foot Visitors Center –which will be the new “front door” for visitors to the campus.
