UT Pan American, City of Hidalgo to open new Education Center near International Bridge
At the request of the City of Hidalgo, The University of Texas-Pan American will open a new Hidalgo Education Center in January that will eventually provide noncredit classes in subjects as diverse as English, business management and child care.

Three outstanding Valley residents to address graduates at UT Pan American ceremonies Dec. 20
Three prominent Valley residents — Dr. Ramiro Casso, M.D., of McAllen, San Benito school board president David A. Garza, and Edinburg businessman J. Humberto Rodriguez — have been selected as speakers for three commencement ceremonies at 11 a.m. and 2 and 5 p.m. at The University of Texas-Pan American Fieldhouse Dec. 20.

Abstract painting, photo exhibits to open in UT Pan American galleries in January
Two art exhibits — "The Aesthetics of the Natural" by Sam Dee Thomas and "Luminous Codes Photography" — are scheduled to open in January in galleries on The University of Texas-Pan American campus.


UT Pan American professor's book on native plants wins state award

Dr. Robert Lonard, professor of biology at The University of Texas-Pan American, has received the Donovan Stewart Correll Award from the Native Plant Society of Texas for his 1993 book, Guide to Grasses of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas.


UT Pan American campus to close for holidays Dec. 24-26, Jan. 1
Offices at The University of Texas-Pan American will be closed Dec. 24-26 for the Christmas holidays and on Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, for New Year's Day.


Spanish play Yerma to be performed at UT Pan American Jan. 28-31
Yerma, a Spanish play by Federico Garcia Lorca, will be performed in the Media Theatre of the University Library at The University of Texas-Pan American Jan. 28-30 at 1 p.m. and Jan. 30-31 at 7:30 p.m.


UT Pan American engineering graduate wins national design competition
Edward Rodriguez, a 1996 graduate of the mechanical engineering program at The University of Texas-Pan American, received a first place award in a national student design competition last month for a project he completed while a senior at the university.
