Official enrollment for fall 2009 increased by 4.6 percent at UTPA
The official student enrollment at The University of Texas-Pan American for fall 2009 increased by 4.6 percent from last fall according to certified numbers released Nov. 18 by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.


Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon featured at Distinguished Speakers Series
One of the country’s top neurosurgeons Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa shared his inspirational story of once picking vegetables in the fields to currently performing brain surgery in the medical field during The University of Texas-Pan American’s Distinguished Speakers Series Tuesday, Nov. 17.

Dr. Robert S. Nelsen, president-designate of The University of Texas-Pan American, was treated to a red carpet welcome Wednesday, Nov. 18, during an event hosted by The University of Texas System to introduce Nelsen to the UTPA community.

UTPA education honor society sweeps at international conference
The Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education chapter at The University of Texas-Pan American are recipients of three international awards including the Achieving Chapter Excellence (ACE) award, the Regional Counselor Award (West), and the ACE of the ACE award. They were recognized at KDP’s 47th Biennial Convocation in Orlando, Florida Oct. 29-31.


Top neurosurgeon in the country to serve as next distinguished speaker
Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa, who once picked vegetables in the fields as an illegal immigrant farmworker and is now one of the country’s top neurosurgeons, will serve as the next speaker for The University of Texas-Pan American’s Distinguished Speakers Series Tuesday, Nov. 17.


UTPA graduate certificates offer competitiveness in workforce
The University of Texas-Pan American is offering students an opportunity to develop skills in a specific area through six graduate certificates that will allow students to meet the demands of the workforce. Four of the certificates were approved Oct. 29 by The University of Texas System.

The Best: The Best Spanish Professors are Right Here
As a Cuban-American born and raised in Miami, Fla., Dr. Stephanie Alvarez knows the importance of having the opportunity to learn about one’s culture and background. That opportunity is what led her to become an assistant professor of Spanish at The University of Texas-Pan American where she encourages students to study their heritage through Spanish and Mexican-American/Latino studies courses.


Student magazine wins fourth at national contest
The University of Texas-Pan American’s Panorama student magazine took fourth place at the 88th Annual National College Media Convention – considered the largest gathering of student journalist and advisers in the world – held in Austin.

McAllen and Edinburg join UTPA to celebrate donation of trees from TXU Energy
The gift of 90 burr oak trees from TXU Energy to The University of Texas-Pan American and the Rio Grande Valley cities of Edinburg and McAllen was celebrated Nov. 3 at the UTPA campus as one that will keep on giving for generations to come.

Ninth annual International Week set for Nov. 16-20
The University of Texas-Pan American will bring the world to the Rio Grande Valley as the campus celebrates its ninth annual International Week 2009, Nov. 16-20, featuring various speakers, performers and specialists, highlighting a week of culture from across the globe.


First Latina bishop in United Methodist Church to speak at UTPA lecture series
Bishop Minerva Carcano, the first Latina bishop in The United Methodist Church and a 1975 alumna of The University of Texas-Pan American, will be the featured speaker at the second annual Hermila Anzaldua Lecture Series hosted by the UTPA Department of Social Work.


UTPA production company brings home second Lone Star Emmy
The University of Texas-Pan American’s Reel to Red Productions has received a Lone Star EMMY for its documentary “The Heart of Experience.” The student internship program has already won a Lone Star EMMY in 2007 and this marks the second EMMY win in its five-year history.
