Students at The University of Texas-Pan American who received approval from the initial Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program can now renew their enrollment in DACA for another two years. The first DACA approvals will begin to expire in September 2014.

In a June 5 press announcement, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson announced the process for individuals to renew their enrollment. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will accept the renewal requests now. Requestors are encouraged to submit their renewal requests approximately 120 days before their current period of deferred action expires. Any submission for renewal must be received prior to the expiration date of their current DACA approval.

USCIS will also continue to accept requests for DACA from individuals who have not previously sought to access the program. However, the program requirements state that individuals who have not continuously resided in the United States since June 15, 2007 are ineligible for DACA. Access the Homeland Security press release here that provides more detailed information.

Locally, the UTPA Minority Affairs Council (MAC) and the South Texas Civil Rights Project (STCRP) will offer a DACA Renewal Informational Forum at 5 p.m., June 14 in the Education Building, Room 1.102.

This event is one of several events occurring across the country as part of the DACA Renewal Summer in coordination with the United We Dream Network's Own The Dream campaign.

The MAC and STCRP will also offer a DACA clinic on June 21 and other clinics are scheduled in July and August. For special accommodations or more information on the forum and clinics, contact the Minority Affairs Council at (956) 563-8457.
