The University of Texas-Pan American invites the public to ring in the holiday season with the pageantry and beauty of the Mariachi tradition. Come and enjoy the beauty and exuberance of Mexican folk music as the award-winning UTPA Mariachi Aztlán celebrates the festive customs associated with a Mexican Christmas celebration.

The University's Department of Music presents the mariachi - which this past weekend captured first place in the university category at the 2013 Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza competition in San Antonio - in its "Navidad Mexicana" and Spring concerts at the Albert L. Jeffers Theatre. The concerts will also feature performances by the Luz de Luna Folkloric Dance Ensemble.

Performances of the Mariachi's "Navidad Mexicana" will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20 and at 2 p.m., 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21.

The mariachi's upcoming concert, "Sounds and Splendor of México," will have performances Jan. 9-12, 2014.

Tickets for all concerts are $10 at the door and will be available at the theater's box office one hour before the shows. Seating is limited so please reserve your seats ahead of time. For reservations call (956) 665-3581.

The UTPA Mariachi program was founded by UTPA College of Arts and Humanities Dean Dr. Dahlia Guerra and is directed by Francisco Loera, a faculty member of UTPA's Department of Modern Languages and Literature. Since 1989, the UTPA Mariachi Aztlán has traveled throughout the United States, Mexico, and Canada as ambassadors representing the beauty of Hispanic music and cultural traditions, and creating a bridge of cultural understanding between countries.

The group's other accolades include performances with the Chicago Lyric Opera and winning Grand Champions at the Mariachi Spectacular de Albuquerque national competition. The mariachi has also performed with the Houston Grand Opera, at the Hollywood Bowl, at the Smithsonian Folk life Festival, and at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
