The community is invited to learn about the latest in social science research and its application to solve real life critical issues facing communities and the nation in the area of education at the Seventh Annual Research Conference (ARC) of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at The University of Texas-Pan American.
There will be numerous presentations and discussions led by UTPA faculty members. The conference will also feature notable guest speakers Dr. Kerry Ann Rockquemore, president and CEO of the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity; Dr. Melissa Michelson, Yale Ph.D. graduate, author and political science professor at Menlo College; and Kati Haycock, president of The Education Trust and one of the nation's leading advocates in the field of education.
Dr. Jessica Lavariega Monforti, conference chair and assistant CSBS dean, said the conference is an opportunity to highlight the wide array of talent housed at UTPA.
"The importance of this is to really showcase the research and capabilities of our students and our faculty and at the same time educate the public. This is a great public service," Lavariega Monforti said. "This is a chance for us to say here is what we know and here is what we want to share."
The ARC will highlight the latest news and educational research through panel sessions, workshops and undergraduate and graduate student research poster presentations. The conference will also include a meet and greet for students, faculty and staff. Lavariega Monforti said there will be something of interest for everyone.
"It's really going to be accessible. We're going to touch on everything from the health care system to politics to the educational system," said Lavariega-Monforti. "It's across the board. This is for everyone. We will address the legal system and the business community too. You name it; we have people studying it at the University."
The conference and pre-conference workshop are free to all students regardless of institutional affiliation, plus UTPA faculty and staff.
Conference registration for non-UTPA faculty, staff and community members is $35. On-site registration will be available on April 11 and 12 or you may register at utpa.edu/csbs-arc. You can also access the conference website for a complete schedule of activities, times and locations.
There will be continuing education opportunities available April 13 for legal professionals, educators and law enforcement members.
