The University of Texas-Pan American's Center for Bilingual Studies had its first advisory board meeting Friday, Dec. 14 to discuss the center's mission to address the needs of bilingual and bicultural families in the Rio Grande Valley and how board members can help.
The meeting, held at the College of Education dean's conference room, included board members representing various colleges and departments within UTPA, local school districts, government, community groups, and educational organizations.
Board members talked about the center's goals, key activities and the roles and responsibilities the members would play in fulfilling the center's mission.
The goals of the center are to:
• research issues of bilingualism and biculturalism nationally and internationally;
• translate research findings into practice through school services, community engagement and policy impacting efforts;
• facilitate and improve educational achievement and attainment for bilingual learners;
• improve physical, mental health and wellness; and
• increase community knowledge and appreciation of cultural, historical, linguistic and anthropological heritage.
UTPA formed the Center for Bilingual Studies last year to examine bilingual communities and how they are shaping the future of the country. The center is an interdisciplinary endeavor, with faculty from different colleges within the University collaborating on research and other activities to better understand bilingual families and the communities in which they live.
