Bragging rights were up for grabs when 17 departments within The University of Texas-Pan American faced off for an office door decorating contest. The Office of the Provost blanketed their door with green and white UTPA slogans and a 3-foot Bucky the Bronc and came out with the win.

UTPA cheerleaders lead the crowd in celebrating school spirit and the start of basketball season during Midnight Madness, held during Spirit Week.

The competition was part of Spirit Week Oct. 5-12 sponsored by the University Program Board and the UTPA Spirit Program. Eric Rodriguez, spirit program coordinator, said he wants to make sure the entire campus community is dedicated to keeping Bronc spirit alive and well.

"It's exciting to have a week full of events to promote spirit in our school. It's the kickoff to our basketball season and I believe the student body needs to have a lot more spirit. These events are important because it gets everybody involved," Rodriguez said. "We need every single person to be part of this."

Other highlights of the week to promote school pride were the Spirit Rally, a friendly competition for the most spirited student organization of 2012, car window decorating, the Bronc Zumbathon and a Broncs Against Breast Cancer volleyball game.

"The attendance is better this year for all these events, even at the volleyball games it has been pretty packed and so we want to keep that up," Rodriguez said.

More than 2,000 Bronc T-shirts were also sold throughout the week at Payments & Collections to encourage campus spirit.

Spirit Week culminated Oct. 12 with an action-packed day and night of games, music, food and fun during the annual Tailgate Party. Students put their grilling talents to the test and also participated in a food-eating contest. The tailgate was followed by the traditional lighting of the UTPA letters.

The Friday night fun continued with the annual Midnight Madness Pep Rally, the official kick off to the first day of basketball practice at UT Pan American. Hundreds of faculty, staff and students crowded into the Fieldhouse to cheer on the Broncs basketball team and watch performances by the cheerleaders and Blazers dance team. Student organizations also showcased their dancing skills in a bid for the coveted dance-off trophy.

Rodriguez said Bronc pride should always be on display at the University.

"Be more involved. Know what is going on in the school, wear your UTPA colors on Friday and show that spirit. The president's office is always trying to get us more involved. 'What is our fight song? What is our alma mater?' Most people don't know them and we are trying to change that and you do that by just being more involved with anything that's happening on campus," Rodriguez said.
