The University of Texas-Pan American began its 11th annual Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) conference Sunday, Sept. 23 with a dinner honoring its sponsors and other supporters of the program.

The dinner, sponsored by Shell, Anheuser-Busch/L&F Distributors, AT&T and IBC, included welcoming remarks from UTPA President Robert S. Nelsen, as well as speeches from U.S. Rep. Rubén Hinojosa, who spearheaded the creation of HESTEC, as well as by sponsors and two current UT Pan American students and one alumnus who attended the conference as children.

UTPA students Maria Ibarra, a sophomore majoring in civil engineering, and Luis Correa, a student majoring in psychology and mathematics, and UTPA alumnus Rogelio "Roy" Borrego, who graduated last year and now works as a quality engineer for Toyota, talked about how the annual conference inspired them to pursue careers related to science, technology, engineering and math.
